Vienna Journal - Day One

My app wasn't working while we were away so, I ended up writing this on the Notes App on my phone, therefore...I'm writing this retrospectively. So, I am back and you'll have to forgive me and read this as if I'm still there. Enjoy and hopefully you can use this as a guide if you ever go to Vienna!

So, our decision to come to Vienna was rather quick and it wasn't the original plan; we were supposed to be going to Reykjavik this week, but for the time we wanted to go and how much we wanted to spend, we just couldn't make it work. We decided to go somehere else, so we thought we'd go somehere we haven't been before...and we're here!

We started our sleepy day at 2.30am and made our way from London Luton Airport to Vienna, with the sun.

It is a commonly known fact that Rob will not get a taxi, anywhere. So, when we got to Austria we made our way to Meidling Hauptstraße and walked (with a pretzel) to our hotel, the Mercure Raphael Wien.

After a couple of hours resting and unpacking in our room we headed out to the Naschmarkt in Mariahilf. Naschmarkt has been a meeting place for visitors and locals of the area since the 16th Century and still serves today to sample food from not only Vienna, but from all over the globe from over 100 stalls.

Venturing towards Karsplatz, we stopped for dinner at Bier und Bierli, a Viennese restaurant specialising in local and global beers. Here, I fell in love...with Wieselburger Gold beer. Preferring to be traditional on our first night, I had Viennese schnitzel with potatoes and cranberry sauce and Rob had Gröst a dish with pan-fried, beef, pork, bacon and potatoes. I loved this place because its passion for beer was obvious immediately. The walls were lined with collections of bottles from all over the world and the ceiling was covered with an impressive beer mat collection. This cool restaurant made me feel as though I was a local in my favourite spot.

Because I'm the best girlfriend on the face of the planet, we then went and found Irish bar, Flanagan's so Rob could watch the Arsenal match. See, told you I was amazing. Chatting, drinking more Wieselburger and watching football ended our first night in Vienna and so far, I loved the place...and the beer.

Expedition Earth: Keep Exploring.
